ST. LOUIS UNDISCOVERED ARTIST: JOAQUIN MUSICK

St. Louis artist, born and reared by his mother, brother of six siblings, father of one daughter; this multi talented singer is also a producer, songwriter, rapper, and DJ. "My mother and my daughter are my source of inspiration!" exclaims Joaquin Musick. His vocals... laid back, smooth, inviting, tepid, with a hint of sensitivity are the makings of this R&B crooner.

Watching his father play drums piqued his interest in drumming, at the age of 4, Joaquin learned how to play drums. His musical influences are: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Teddy Riley, R. Kelly, Gospel Groups, Babyface, and his cousin Kevin Dyer.

Kevin Dyer was a rapper who would take a youthful Joaquin to the recording studio along with him. Musick would ask and plea to let him rap, his older would ignore the youngster's requests. Joaquin did not let up, finally Kevin gave in and allowed the 8 year old cousin show his rapping skills. Impressed, Dyer took him under his tutelage and began to develop his talent. One day, Kevin asked Joaquin to sing, unsure of his vocal finesse, he reluctantly displayed his vocals. Dyer was pleasantly surprised and decided to become his cousin's manager.

Joaquin formed a group in Middle School patterned after Boys to Men named Strictly Central. They performed a song written by Musick titled "Why Can't We Get Back Together" in a talent show and won. Unfortunately, the group disbanded after two performances. Musick went solo, with the insistence, of Kevin Dyer...some time later, he entered a talent show. Joaquin stepped onto stage, opens his mouth and flawless notes permeate through the venue, little did he know he was dealing with a hostile audience and was booed off stage promptly. This incident shook his confidence, he decided abruptly and decisively he will not perform on stage again.

Two years ago, tragedy occurred, Kevin Dyer passed on. Joaquin was asked to sing at his cousin's memorial feeling unsure of his ability of singing, he became doubtful of his capacity to fulfill such a honorable request. "If I can sing at my cousin's memorial, I can do anything." said Musick. He sang for his heart out for his friend, mentor, manager, his big cousin Kevin Dyer.

Once Joaquin regrouped, he reached out to a friend Truenessia Combs-Ross who is also a singer, she in turn introduced him to a manager; he booked one show. This experience opened doors and met musicians who enjoyed working with him as he working with them. Because of artistic differences the manager and himself parted ways. He and his cousin formed a writing team and publishing company, Pendamonium.

He decided to book his own shows, because he did not want to be "handled." He enjoys being an independent artists. Joaquin is a hands on artists, he enjoys the artistic freedom and control. He performs all original material and seldom does cover song in his shows or recordings. Musick has a sizable following on the music scene. Musick is also working with a couple of local bands: One Night Stand, R&B band. Black Rose, R&B and Pop band, and Illphonics, Hip-Hop band - which consists of one rapper, four musicians. CB and Keith aka Black and Brew, members of Illphonics worked on Joaquin Musick's album "All Mixed Up." Joaquin came up with the name of the album, because the emotions of each song takes the listener on a in depth, close and personal journey into his life at that particular moment in time.
